ABOUT JACKSON PAUL BAER

I’m originally from Woodstock, Ga; north of Atlanta. I’m a huge Braves and Georgia Tech fan. I’ve lived in Oregon for the past 5+ years now and love the Trailblazers as well as Oregon State, where I will graduate with a B.A. in English in June 2014. I’ve been married for 10 years and we have 4 beautiful children together, aged 3-9. We are in the proces of moving back to Georgia to settle our family next to family.

I graduated from a Bible college in 2003 and that is where I met my wife. I spent 7 years as a youth & teaching pastor but have not been a pastor for the past 2 years now. I’m not very religious though you will find spiritual themes within my writing due to it being such a large part of the majority of my life. My characters, much like myself, struggle with faith, doubt, and love as a part of their everyday lives. The novel is by no means a Christian novel, however, with language you’d find in real life as well as situations not suited for a church service.

My favorite author is Joyce Carol Oates and I also love Junot Diaz and Sherman Alexie, among many others. Their novels have influenced me the most and I’d like to think my writing style resembles their amazing books. Them by Joyce Carol Oates is the best book I’ve ever read and if you’ve never read it, stop what you’re doing right now and read it. Seriously, do it now.

Like good books should, Darkness Watching left me pondering the story after I'd finished reading AND left me wanting more. Adams built a strong world for readers to be immersed. But the regular world retained full realism. Normal every day teen situations felt completely believable. I enjoyed learning alongside Ashlyn as she struggled to grasp this new aspect of her life. I am anxious to see where Adams takes the next phase of the story. I hope to delve deeper into the world and its characters.

ABOUT EMMA ADAMS

Emma spent her childhood creating imaginary worlds to compensate for a disappointingly average reality, so it was probably inevitable that she ended up writing fantasy and paranormal for young adults. She was born in Birmingham, UK, which she fled at the first opportunity to study English Literature at Lancaster University. In her three years at Lancaster, she hiked up mountains, skydived in Australia, and endured a traumatic episode involving a swarm of bees in the Costa Rican jungle. The Crests All Together...AND a Surprise! ;)

What am I working on?

I am always working on multiple projects.  Currently, I am revising the sequel, The Outlanders, to my young adult fantasy debut novel, The Prophecy(which releases November 15).  I also have a futuristic thriller called Number 25598, a middle grade fiction in the vein of Judy Blume called Met Kit: An American Boy, and another young adult fantasy novel without a title, all in progress.

How does my work differ from others of its genre?

I try to take traditional young adult plot themes and turn them on their heads.  In addition, I seek to inspire teens to think outside the box, to be different and unique.

Why do I write what I do?

I write young adult books because I LOVE young adult books.  My friend and Dream Team member Danielle Craver (she created all the crest for The Prophecy) got me hooked on the YA genre, and I’ve read that almost exclusively ever since.  Epic high fantasy appeals to me because I’ve always loved Arthurian legend. When George R.R. Martin combined that time period with fantastical elements, my mind sprung to life.  Reading fantasy allows a person to fully immerse in a totally different world, escaping this one completely.  Who doesn’t need a good escape every now and then?

How does your writing process work? 

I am a total pantser, which means I do not plan a thing.  I have a rough idea of how I want the story to start and how I want it to end, but I let the characters take over for the middle. Sometimes that gets me in some logic trouble, but I’m fortunate enough to have my Dream Team and critique partners to catch those little snafus.

The demands on my life and time afford me a very short window to get my writing done, usually between 3pm-5pm.  I have ADD, so I always have to drink something caffeinated to help me focus. Also, a little container of chocolate is a creative must.  I seek to write a chapter a day (my Dream Team member and timekeeper, Kim Sharp, requires a new chapter to read each night which keeps me on task). 

The creative portion of my work takes me very little time. I wrote the entire Fulfillment Trilogy in 3 months.  But I am also an anal grammar freak, so editing the work takes me MUCH longer.  It’s a painstaking process.

So, to recap:  Afternoon writing time with chocolate and caffeine, 1 chapter a day, and edit, edit, edit!

I'm working on more than one project at any given time too. Sometimes I have to listen closely to who's talking in my head to know what book I'm supposed to work the scene into. :)

I'm a pantser too. I do very little planning before I start work. And I don't write from point A to point B. I'm all over the place. Sometimes I write the ending first, like with one project I'm working on now. The ending is written...now i just need a good middle and a great first sentence. I may have to get Meradeth to help me with a killer first sentence since I've been agonizing over it for weeks. :)

Cassie screamed with pain.
“How does it feel to be on the receiving end of pain, Dr. Jewel?”



“How do you know my name,” the Shadow woman asked squirming on the floor.



“I know a lot of things about you, and none of it is good. Did you feel real powerful when you had helpless people kidnapped?”



There was shock on Cassie’s grey face. 
“Yeah, I know all about it. You had three innocent people killed to get your dirty hands on that gold. You are scum Cassandra Jewel.” 


Jayna grabbed Cassie from the floor and threw her against the wall.



Cassie cowered.



“Were you planning to go to their funeral,” Jayna asked, “and pretend you were their friend? Maybe shed a few tears?” Jayna threw a powerful punch into Cassie’s solar plexus. 


Cassie doubled over with pain, coughing.
 “Stop it,” Cassie whispered hoarsely.



“Why should I? Tell me one good reason I should not kill you?”
Cassie coughed, still trying to catch her breath.
 


Jayna, that’s enough. Ethan warned her. We are not here to kill anyone.



That’s what the bitch deserves. 
Jayna turned around and saw a new stack of gold plates on the dining room table. 


“I see, you brought more gold from the Underworld,” she said to Cassie. 
She walked up to the table and scooped up the plates in her arms. They were about ten pounds. "Awesome! We’ll make a few more miracles with these.
"


Cassie screamed with rage again. “Put those back. You can’t have them. They are mine.”



“Not on your life,” Jayna said and walked through the wall. Ethan and Colin followed her; they didn’t want to lose sight of Jayna for a second, in case the demon came back.

12 Random Facts

I consulted with the Dream Team, and they said I should show my readers that I'm just a regular person like anyone else.  So, I'll tell you twelve random facts about myself to show that while I'm not exactly a "regular" person I'm definitely a person--albeit quirky (oh, and I have no problem telling you all about myself...often times way more than you actually want to know).  ;)  I will start with what might be the strangest of all my idiosyncrasies...


1) I never leave the house without makeup on, not even to take out the trash.  


2) I have ADD and must drink a caffeinated drink once a day to keep my focus.  


3) I have had a crush on Val Kilmer my whole life.  In fact, I try to suavely work his name into most conversations. 

4) I don't like cake (don't hate on me).


5) I teach a Couch to 5k class every spring and fall.  


6)  I hate to cook.


7)  I absolutely cannot spell.  Seriously, it's so bad that spell check often can't interpret what I'm trying to say.  


8)  I am left handed.  


9)  I am almost a double major.  I lack the final 3 credits for a double major in English because I refused to take Old English.  Seriously, how would being fluent in Old English help me at all in life (Shakespeare isn't even Middle English--he's modern English)?  It's the principle of the thing...


10) I love writing and directing plays but recently moved away from that to pursue my lifelong dream--being an author. 


11) In my kickboxing class, I often pretend I am either a ninja or a stunt double in a movie.


12) Every spring, I get bright blonde highlights, and every fall, I dye my hair dark with red highlights.  Even the cashier at Walmart noticed my pattern.  I couldn't decide if I should be impressed with her observation skills or freaked out that I'm in Walmart enough to be noticed like that...

Love the comment on the highlights. I change my hair up quite a bit. If I'm growing it out, I'll change the color periodically (usually between blondes and reds) or once I've grown it out, I'll cut it short. Lately I've been playing with the highlights- they seem a bit easier to keep up wit.

It's very nice to 'meet' you and learn such fun facts!

Mary-- Me too!!! The only reason I still have long hair is that I promised the hubby I would stop doing the cut/grown out thing for a little while (he prefers long). For many years, I would grow my hair out really long then chop it off super short (I'm talking spiky short). I'm going with color changes now since I can't break out the scissors just yet! ;)

LOL! My MIL just had all the color stripped from her hair, and she loves going natural! :)

I dyed my hair 15 times my senior year in high school. LOL!

Fun post and I enjoyed reading it. I'll stay gray-haired. Much easier and less energy. Spellcheck and I get along, it's commas that drive me to drink.My puncutarion really sucks. Thank goodness for editors.
